Helena Kallisti
(adopted name) - (aka Lena)
- (b.) June 27, (at the time of the story she is 24) our heroine and main female character. Cursed by the Fates to be a Siren. She was punished with empathy so that she could feel all the pain and torment of those around her. Some god had mercy on her and sent several spirits to guard her, Sephalia & Sirena, Chloe, and Sivoura. Sick of the way she drew men to her with hypnotic accuracy and the terrible things that seemed to befall them she constantly moved - never truly letting her guard down...Helena (birth name unknown) was adopted by a Greek couple (hence her name). Her birth father had been a soldier and was killed in action (he was claimed by the Valkyries prematurely and asked one favor of them - to bless his daughter with protection since he would not be there for her - they could not agree to protect his young wife for her destiny was too well writ, but his daughter was new enough to the world that they could drop in some things without disturbing her fate too much), and later her birth mother died in a car accident when she was less than 2 years old. Originally of Black-Hispanic descent (on her mother’s side) and Celtic (on her father’s). Her mother had the gift of prophetic dreams, though she hid her abilities as directed by her mother as a protective measure. Her maternal grandmother was from Cuba and born there (she left while she was pregnant to get out before Castro took over.) She was a powerful Santero (the wisewoman for her village) and on the day of her mother’s birth her grandmother had foreseen her daughter’s death and her leaving a granddaughter behind. At that time she made a plea and offering to the gods to protect her granddaughter, the Furies answered. Because she was protected by the Furies, Helena was coveted and sought after. They had given her access to their powers (for extreme situations only). Because of the possible damage she could wield they also sent 3 “sisters” to her. (All women who had died deaths by the family/people very close to them.) Their job was to protect and guide her. Helena was a natural witch born with clairaudience. She could hear and “feel” spirits. (Fully unlocking her powers would allow her to see and touch them - to totally sense them.) The sisters guarded her from harm and possession by weaker spirits. They shared her body but could venture out if they needed to. When they were acting in her body she would have no recollection of anything they did. When in danger or ill they would forcibly take over to protect and heal her if need be. Another reason those 3 particular spirits were sent to her was that their lives, parts of them, mirrored hers. So since she would be without a physical family they would be there for her. Helena’s powers peaked when she was a young child, but not realizing she had them or how to use them she shut them off completely. When they reawakened her sisters took the time to manifest to her slowly so she could adapt and learn her powers as well as get to know the guardians who’d been with her all her life. At 16 she’d met a soldier who was really an agent of Ares, and son of Poseidon and Amphitrite, sent to capture her and control her for her powers. When she fought and resisted him, he raped her and then he mysteriously disappeared - it’s suspected that some force, either demons, or even her sisters came after him (or maybe her “aunts”) either way she doesn’t remember doing anything…She never told her foster parents and could never face them again after that so she left a note and went on the run. For (supposedly) harming one of her sons, Amphitrite made Poseidon curse her with the “call of the Siren” (her eyes and voice would cast a spell on men and cause them to follow her and even seek her out). This “talent” got her into several bad situations. And because of this, she hated the sea and anything to do with it, whenever she was near it she could always hear Amphitrite laughing at her in the sound of the waves and the gulls. This also caused her not to date much because she could never be sure if the guy truly cared for her or was just “under her spell”. She refused to sing or make eye contact. Helena tried to keep a low profile because though her sisters would protect her, she knew her aunts would destroy anyone who threatened or harmed her.
Sephalia Dionysia Agrios
aka Sephalia of Thebes
- Devotee of Dionysos when she was alive. She disagreed with the way the rest of the cult grew to be - ruthlessly killing innocents - and left. For her "betrayal" her "sisters" who were at once sworn to protect her as well as one another came after her and killed her.
Chloe Jacoba
- French noblewoman, not much more than that is known of her. She died in a fire at the hands of her uncle in an attempt to claim her land.
Sire-na
Sephalia’s “split half”, Siré for short [Sire is Eris spelled backwards]. She is the crazy follower of the goddess Eris. Her name is meant to be a joke on the polar opposite of Eris, Aneris (who rules order and logic).
Sivoura
(Sir) Captain Xander Drake
- Pirate Dark-Hunter, recently transplanted to New Orleans. (b.) January 5, 1695; (d.) October 18, 1723. Xander Drake was born of a bar maid who worked in a tavern in a pirate frequented sea port. He was the son of the first mate and his father was favored by the captain. When the captain was at the end of his life he handed his ship and crew over to the first mate, but since he was too old and lame his son accepted the ship for him. Despite his beginnings he was a man of honor, taught by his father to do only what he must to survive and that violence against the innocent and unarmed were inexcusable. Betrayed by his first mate who made a deal with the East India Trading Company to hand over Drake in exchange for a royal pardon and charge of Drake's ship. He also took up with Drake's wife Aemilia. Drake was charged with piracy as well as a list of crimes the first mate had actually committed (independent of any of Drake's orders). For a pirate Drake was actually not as ruthless as historians would have you believe. He never harmed women or children and gave unarmed men the chance to escape with their lives. As punishment he was drawn and quartered.
